The capacity to interview well is most often inherent. However it can also be trained to a degree. The Ministerial Director will want to take time to assist the pastor with resources--books, presentations etc.--to help him/her to envision the capacity to grow in this area.

It would also be helpful to take time with the pastor, if willing, to coach the pastor prior to a transition opportunity. This could include some practice sessions to help him/her to be more confident going into an interview.

In addition to the above support it might also be helpful to confide in a head elder that this pastor is very effective in his leadership but struggles in the interview process. It would also be helpful to point out to the elder that some candidates are very smooth in the interview but may not meet expectations when it comes to day to day pastoring. In this way the elder would be better equipped in chairing the meeting and be able to help to guide the discussion and decision process.
